Balboa Park Golf Course - While lacking the Torrey Pines location, don’t overlook the convenience of San Diego’s other municipal golf course just a 5 minute cab drive from downtown hotels, the San Diego Convention & Visitor Center, Little Italy and San Diego’s Gas Lamp District. Balboa Park Golf Course is a beautiful, traditional and challenging golf course with great views of the San Diego skyline, Balboa Park and Pt. Loma with Pacific Ocean San Diego Harbor in the distant background.

The Balboa Park Municipal Golf Course offers 18 holes of great golf and 9-hole executive golf course too. It is a local favorite due to the quality of the course and the inexpensive green fees. The slightly higher green fee for visiting golfers is a absolute bargain compared to the significantly higher green fees at the other golf courses in San Diego that are a 30 – 40 miles commute from downtown and the Mission Valley / Hotel Circle area of San Diego.

Balboa Park is always in great shape and a few holes offer dramatic elevation changes that will really add to the enjoyment of your round. A challenging but improving tee time reservation system can be successfully navigated by following these tips:

• All reserved times begin at 7:07 a.m.

• Times from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. are assigned to walk-up players on a “1st Come – 1st Served” policy.

• Call-in phone reservations are released 7 days in advance at 7:30 p.m. by calling (619) 570-1234.

• For tee time reservations inside of 6 days of your day of play call 619- 235-1184 or visit the Balboa Golf Course Manager's office from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Long overlooked and undiscovered as a corporate golf tournament venue, meeting planners are now recognizing the convenient and central proximity of Balboa Park Golf Course to most of San Diego’s hotels and meeting space locations. Balboa Park allows companies and organizations the opportunity for meetings and work in the a.m., a relaxing and fun round of championship golf in the afternoon and still have plenty of time to get back to the hotel and casually prepare for the company sponsored dinner banquet and entertainment activities.

All tournaments are at non-resident rates ($ 55 tournament green fees) and the normally optional carts are required.   Balboa Park also offers practice putting greens, a driving range, coffee shop and Golf Shop managed by American Golf Corp.

• Notes & Comments: Near downtown, in the very heart of Balboa Park. The course underwent extensive redesign. If you make par on #16 (par-5) send me an e-mail. The original course was built in 1915 and the course record (old course) belongs to Sam Snead, who shot a 60 in 1943. This course, together with Torrey Pines Golf Course , hosts the San Diego City Amateur every June.

  A devilish little course. Its deceiving short yardage makes it look easier than it actually is (if easy at all). Perhaps it's the perfect example of when the USGA slope/rating system, seemingly based mostly on distance, fails to capture the true difficulty of a golf course. Some holes have no bail out, forcing the players to play very safe, short of greens, to avoid disaster. Aggressive play will, sooner or later, lead to disastrous consequences. A good course for not-very-long and straight hitters, and patient players. A bad course for those who are wild off the tee and inaccurate iron players.
