Review by Dale Winstead

Miramar Memorial golf course is the best military golf course in San Diego County. It doesn't have the interesting contour and elevation changes that you'll find at Admiral Baker golf course, but its superior conditioning more than makes up. Nor does it have the oceanside scenery that the Sea 'n' Air golf course has, but it sports nearly 400 more yards in total length.

The golf course at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station can best be described as a very playable course. Its prime feature is its greens: they're nearly always perfect, rolling fast and true. Most of them are very receptive to well struck shots, although the greens at 9 and 18 were replaced in 1996 and they are still hard. Most of the greens have some interesting contour, although some are notoriously flat. I believe there are plans to replace the flat ones in the not too distant future.

If you haven't played this course in a while, you may be surprised to find several new water hazards. You also may be surprised at the modified routing which places three par fives on the front 9, with only one on the back 9. Also, the new green at number 9 stretches that hole considerably longer.

New water hazards have been placed at numbers 3, 11, and 18. The one at 3 is not really in play, as it is right in front of the tee box. The one at 11 is left of the green and since 11 is a short dogleg right this water hazard really doesn't impact play very often either. The one at 18 can present a challenge. 18 is a fairly long (441 from blue tees) par four that doglegs right. The water hazard lines the right side of the fairway challenging those players who tend to slice their long iron approach shots. Combined with the new green, 18 is a bit of a challenge, and very enjoyable.

Number 9 now plays 562 yards from the blue tees. Those of you who played Miramar in the past may recall that it was about 500 yards before they replaced the green. Now it's two good pokes to reach this green, even with the typically trailing breeze. In Santa Ana conditions, with the breeze in your face, it's a three shot hole for anyone less than John Daly or Tiger Woods!  There's another tee box available further back on this hole, and it's put in use periodically when the normal tee boxes are being maintained. From there, this hole stretches 640 yards--lots of fun! Some of us hope this tee box will be used more in the future.

All of the par threes on this course are fun. Number 5, from the blue tees, presents an intimidating shot of about 150 yards through a chute of trees. This one can be tricky, as the player cannot feel the breeze from the tee box. Number 8 is a very picturesque hole. A tee shot of about 185 yards must clear a water hazard front and right, but not hook into the sand bunker on the left. Number 14 is a challenging 200 yard tee shot, and the green is the most difficult on the course--steeply contoured. Number 16 is a fun, short par three whose green is well protected by several bunkers.

Miramar is not a difficult course, and it's only real defense is the wind. Some of the holes are pretty long par fours (10, 12, 18) to present a challenge for the shorter hitters, but in all, Miramar is fun course, with great greens.  Again. in my opinion...it's the best Military golf course in San Diego.
