Long recognized as one of the nation's foremost municipal golf facilities, Torrey Pines is located about 20 minutes north of downtown San Diego on the coastal bluffs of Southern California. Bounded by mountains to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west, the seaside courses are often swept by sunshine or by rain, fog and chilling winds.
Torrey Pines North and Torrey Pines South are each 18-hole courses, and both are played by PGA Tour professionals during the Buick Invitational of California, held in January or February every year.
Both courses were originally designed in 1957 by William Bell, Sr. In 2001, Torrey Pines South underwent a $3.5 million renovation and redesign by Rees Jones, making it longer and more difficult. It quickly gained a new-found respect with the PGA Tour Pros and was selected by the USGA to host the 2008 U.S. OPEN Golf Championship in June 2008. This establishes Torrey Pines Golf Course with the distinction of being the “Only” municipal golf course ever selected by the USGA to host a U.S. OPEN Golf Tournament.
Although both golf courses provide some of the most dramatic ocean views from several holes, Torrey Pines North is still considered the host for the Torrey Pines Golf Course signature hole - the Par 3 # 6 Hole with the 3rd hole (also a Par 3) on Torrey Pines South Course being a very, very close second overall.
With a name that stirs the imagination of golf enthusiasts all over the world, and the many holes on both the North and South courses that provide dramatic ocean views Torrey Pines Municipal Golf Course is often referred to as “Pebble Beach South” and is truly a “golfer’s paradise.”

Torrey Pines Golf Course - San Diego golf course located on the coast of Southern
California in the city of La Jolla.
These two 18-hole
championship golf courses in San Diego - Torrey Pines North and Torrey Pines South - are world-renown golf courses. Both Torrey Pines golf courses are played
by the PGA TOUR professionals during the FARMERS INSURANCE Invitational (formerly The Buick Invitational) which is hosted by Torrey Pines Golf Course every year in Januray or February. The tournament is featured by USA and CBS television networks. Torrey Pines South first opened to play in June 1957.
Both golf courses feature holes bordering the ocean and the view on many holes
is awesome! There are also deep canyons with thick vegetation and wildlife.
The Torrey Pines North course is shorter than Torrey Pines South course, but some say the North is more
scenic. The South course is a tough test of golf and requires good length
off the tee. Both courses are rather open with strategically placed bunkers.
When playing these courses one should keep in mind two general rules: 1. It is
better, usually, to be short of the green than over the green 2. The general
lie of the land is towards the ocean, so most putts break in that direction.
