TORREY PINES NEWS
Edited by Martin "Rick" Olivera
DECEMBER 2000
  • Non-Conforming Golf Clubs-- For those following this issue, let me remind you that the club's position is to abide by The Rules of golf as issued by the USGA. Therefore, our tournaments may NOT by played with non-conforming clubs, and scores from a round of golf played with a non-conforming club in the bag are NOT to be posted for handicapping purposes. Read through the USGA Press Release for further clarification on this issue. In addition, it may be worth your time to read through the USGA List of Non-Conforming Driving Clubs for a thorough detail of what you may NOT use in tournaments played by The Rules. If you read through this list, in addition to the Callaway ERC and ERC II drivers you'll also find, among others, the new TaylorMade R300, R320 and R360 drivers.

    ==================

  • Newsletter Now On Line-- The TPMGC monthly newsletter can now be downloaded or viewed from the club's web page. It's in MS Word format and about 500 kbytes in size. Those of you who use MS Word as an application within your browser may be able to view it on line, and those who are not able to view it on line can download it, then use MS Word to view it off line or print it and then read it.

    ==================

  • Scholarship Recipients-- The recipients of our annual scholarships for junior golfers are Ryan Kholer from Rancho Bernardo High School, and Adrienne Cipparone from Poway High School. They both had the highest combined scoring average and grade point average, and they both intend to participate in college golf when they finish high school. As you may remember, the $800 scholarships -- soon to be raised to an amount not yet determined -- are raised for local junior golfers through the entry fees collected during the club's annual Sanderson Charity tournament held in May. The tournament honors our charter members Grady and [the late] Flo Sanderson.

NOVEMBER 2000
  • SPECIAL TOURNAMENT- The club will have a special SUNDAY tournament to say good bye to the year 2000. It'll take place on December 31, 2000, on the South Course, Stroke Play format. The sign-up for this tournament will be on Saturday, December 16th, 6am, TP lounge (I'll take care of it). The Tournament Chairman is John Hoffman.

  • NOVEMBER GENERAL MEETING- Among other items, Art Stromberg was elected to the Board of Directors. Art has been a member of the Handicap Committee for some time, and of the club for quite some time. Welcome aboard! Hal Boston, past-president and also long time member of the club, decided not to run for re-election and take a break from his Board duties. Current Board members Dean Creech, Mark Doyle, Claude Gigoux, John Hoffman, Hank Johnson, Steve Larson, and Jack Petrick were re-elected for another two-year term.

  • CALLAWAY ERC-II DRIVER- As you may already know, this golf club as been deemed "non conforming". Callaway Golf itself deemed this club "illegal" per USGA standards, even before submitting it to the USGA for approval. The ERC-II driver is legal per R&A Rules (i.e., all over the world but the US and Mexico) and has been selling quite well abroad. In fact the club is so popular that it's being re-imported into the US and sold here, against Callaway Golf marketing policies and regulations. In order to avoid this loss in revenue in the US market, Callaway began selling it here too. However, since the club does not conform, it will no be accepted in any competition governed by USGA rules of golf. Since the Torrey Pines Men's Golf Club plays by The Rules of Golf (USGA Rules), the ERC-II driver MAY NOT be used in any of our tournaments. Players who use this club in any TPMGC tournament will be assessed the penalty of DISQUALIFICATION per Rule 4-1a.

OCTOBER 2000
  • Flodell W. Sanderson (2/8/1918-9/29/2000) --

Flo, a long time Tournament Coordinator for the Torrey Pines Men's Golf Club and wife of 40-year Handicap Chairman Grady Sanderson, passed away on Friday, September 29th. She passed on from complications surrounding another stroke suffered two weeks earlier, and an abdominal aneurysm. Besides Grady, she left behind two sons, four daughters, thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Flo and Grady Sanderson

She was a charter member of the Torrey Pines Women's Golf Club, but will be forever remembered for the cheerful greetings and handling of all our Sunday's group tournaments for a long long time. She and Grady were both constant fixtures at the golf courses for the 40+ years Grady served as the only Handicap Chairman the club ever had known since its formation in 1958. For a time, in the 1960's, they ran the concessions for the golf courses.

In 1998 the club started an annual tournament called "The Sanderson" to honor the devotion, energy, and enthusiasm that both, Flo and Grady, demonstrated to golf in general, and the Torrey Pines Men's Golf Club in particular. It is the rare dedication from people like Flo and Grady that makes it possible for the club to run as efficiently as it does.

We owe Flo and Grady a debt of gratitude.

    Flo, you'll be sorely missed.

    Steve Larson, TPMGC President

  • SCHEDULE CHANGES- Due to conflicting schedule with Torrey Pines, two tournaments this month will have shotgun starts. They are the Thursday Sweeps on October 5, and Sunday's Hero-Bum on October 22. In both cases, tee times had already been assigned or signed up, so tournament chairmen had to redo the schedule giving each foursome a starting tee, instead of a tee time. If you had signed up for either tournament, make sure to check the revised tee assignments so you know in which tee you'll be starting.

SEPTEMBER 2000
  • Club Championships - Prize Allocation: For prize allocation go to the prize report issued by Steve Larson.

  • Stableford Points-- Winners of the Sunday Stableford tournament were: Steve Roberts (Low Gross: +8 points), Don Rickman (1st Flight: +9 points), and John Lomac (2nd Flight: +14 points). Closest to the Hole: #3, Jim Powell; #8, Pat Shea; #11, Jack Miller; #16 John Lomac. John Lomac aced #16 from the new tees set up between the 15th green and the canyon to the west. See the schedule for complete final results. We had six unfilled spots. Three were due to no-shows: Kurt Nelson, Bob Imlay, and Shane Hadley. And three were just unfilled because there were no players on stand-by.

AUGUST 2000
  • Club Championships - Final Results: Andrew Kissick is the new club champion. He defeated Josh Breier 1-up in the final match. Andrew birdied the last hole hitting a great second shot with a 3-wood from the left rough, short of the fairway bunker, to the right fringe, pin high. He then chipped on and made the putt. Josh had to settle for par. Both, Andrew and Josh, are Callaway employees, so it seems there will be some bragging going on at the office this coming week.

Andrew was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. First and foremost a hockey player, he took up golf at age ten. He won several junior golf tournaments and was the Junior Champion at Weston Golf & CC for three years straight. He earned a golf scholarship at Florida International University in Miami. He played in their team for four years while earning his BS degree. Andrew is currently a Senior Test Analyst in Research and Development at Callaway Golf. Andrew has been a member of the club since December 1999.

James Mintun, seeded #1, won the first flight. Steve Giallombardo won the second flight with a deadly short game in the final match. Mark Moede won the third flight when his opponent, Bruce Miller, had to leave town unexpectedly therefore forfeiting the final match. The fourth flight was won by Fred Cartwright. The fifth flight was won by Robert Palmer while Jerry Lucas prevailed in the sixth flight. Congratulations to all the winners!!

During the qualifying rounds, Paul Gillen aced #17 North with an "easy" 7-iron in the thick fog on Saturday. And Bud Rollison aced #8 South on Sunday.

Check the brackets in the Sunday Schedule for more detail on the matches.

  • Pat Perez-- son of TPMGC member Tony Perez and older brother of TPMGC member Mike Perez, won last week on the Buy.com tour at the Ozarks Open. His tour bio says that he plays out of Torrey Pines and one of his special interests is sleeping. According to Tony, Pat's teacher is Mike Owen (Torrey Pines). Pat, now 24, won the Junior World Championship back in 1993 (10-under 278, Torrey South) and worked at Torrey's driving range at age 14 through high school. Congratulations Pat (and the Perez family) !!

  • It seems this month has some club members playing in prestigious tournaments. In addition to Mike Hartford playing in the US Amateur, we also have current board member and former president John Hoffman playing in the British Mid-Amateur at Royal Troon. Good luck, guys!

  • Notes from Board Meeting of 8/15--

    • Jim Allen's Report:

      • Jim indicated that the 5-year-plan is still under revision by the City Council. Next GAC meeting is on 9/21. As part of the club's deal with the City, Jim mentioned that it is expected more TPMGC involvement in the Buick Invitational and San Diego City Amateur in the form of volunteer work.

      • Changes/Maintenance on the Courses:

Beware that the OB limit on #18 South is now the EAST edge of the cart path. There will be a sign at the tee box indicating so, and there will also be markings on the cart path. Also, the area west of the service road on the left side of #15 South will be marked OB. This is to protect the green nursery located there. The tee box by the service hut left of #16 South will be available. It makes for a quite different #16.

The almost-gone tree on the right side of #7 South (150 marker) will be replaced by another tree when the re-construction of the TP Lodge takes place. They'll bring in a special machine that will allow removing and re-planting of large trees.

Courses renovation will start on 9/5 (water shutoff to dry out the courses) and will continue through 9/26.

Lastly, due to a "suggestion" from PGA TOUR agronomists, the fairways will be brought in (narrowed), but the rough will remain low to allow for faster play.

      • Phone Reservation System: A new one will be acquired and installed to replace the current one, which is full of problems.

    • Local Rule: #6 South Boundary: FYI, a TPMGC local rule makes the fence on the right side of #6 South an IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTION. This means that you can take relief from the FENCE by dropping within one-club-length from the nearest point not interfering with your stance and swing.

    • Membership Fees: The Board voted to have the Renewal Fees at $65 (from $60) and Late Renewal at $70 (from $65). New Membership Fees will remain at $90, and Junior Membership Fees will remain at $15. These changes will be effective for the upcoming renewal period (September/October/November, 2000).

  • Sunday Hero-Bum: The sign-up for this tournament will be on Saturday, September 2nd, 6am, TP lounge.

    ========================

  • Club Championships-- Check out the Sunday Schedule to view the seven brackets and starting times for this year's matches. Please notice that the starting times on Saturday 8/19 are for the NORTH course. For the remaining matches (8/20, 8/26, and 8/27), the starting times are for the SOUTH course. Due to lack of participants, one full flight (7th) was cancelled and absorbed into the 6th flight.

  • Club Championships-- As you probably can tell by looking at the tee times for Saturday, August 12th, the sign up for the higher flights this year has been very poor. In fact, we had to give tee times back to the City, since we were able to fill time slots only through 9:42am. There were 12 other slots we could have used to enter 48 more players. Up until last year we had complaints because members were unable to enter tournaments due to the high demand for tournament tee times. Now we have the opposite. With few exceptions (SCGA Better-Ball, President's Cup, Xmas Scramble), we seem to be unable to play Sunday tournaments with full fields. Please notice that due to the poor turn up for this Saturday, and to be able to accomodate the City, Steve Larson, the Club Championships tournament chairman, had to make some changes to the tee times, moving players up to squeeze them at earlier times. If you signed up to play this Saturday, make sure you verify your tee time.

  • Torrey Trivia-- Did you know that the lone tree in the middle of the 14th fairway on the North Course is the only tree that was already planted before the construction of the courses? All the other trees you see were planted during or after construction.

NOTE: If you know other bits of Torrey Trivia that you'd like to share with the rest of the membership, please send them to me and I'll post them here, and Mark Doyle will put them in the Newsletter.

  • The bad news is that Mike Hartford, current San Diego City Amateur and Torrey Pines Men's Golf Club champion, will not be able to defend his club title this year. The REALLY good news is that the reason Mike won't be able to defend his title is because he has qualified to play in this year's US Amateur. Mike qualified by shooting a sizzling 136 (8-under-par) over 36 holes at Warner Springs Ranch. He'll be playing 36 holes of medal-play at Baltursol on August 21st to try to earn one of the 64 spots in the match-play brackets. Great going Mike, and good luck at Baltusrol !!

  • Former club champion Mike Riley added another big feather to his already featherish cap by winning the California State Senior Amateur at Poppy Hills. Mike shot 73-76-72=221 under very difficult "Monterey Peninsula" conditions, which was enough to win by two shots. Among other titles, Mike won the TPMGC Club Championship in 1998, and the San Diego City Senior Amateur in 1998 and 1999. Congratulations Mike !!

  • Sunday Tournament Results-- This will save you an email to me: Unless I am the tournament chairman, I have no control over when a specific t.c. will email or fax me the results of his event. If you are really anxious to know the results, call or email the corresponding t.c. This does not apply to the Thursday group, which have a pretty good team of t.c.'s (Claude and Roger) and scorer (Bob Crabb) who, with the help of other volunteers, take care of all their tournaments.

  • Stableford Tournament (Sunday Group): The sign-up for the September tournament (Sunday) will be on Saturday, August 5th, 6am, Torrey lounge. The tournament chairman is Rick Olivera (yes, me), so if you have any questions please send me email (I check my email more often than I check my answering machine).

JULY 2000
  • Not much going on in July, is there? Traditionally a "slow" month for the club, with lots of members on vacation. Ah! The Member-Guest took over 6 hours to complete, which for some of the participants must have felt like an entire vacation (... in hell).

JUNE 2000
  • SCGA Better-Ball-- The overall winners are Jack Miller and Dave Monahan. They shot net 129 on the Sunday version of the tournament, and then beat Thursday winners Steve O'Connell and John Westwood in 22 holes, after both teams had tied the playoff round with net 63 (North Course). Jack and Dave move on to the regional qualifying tournament to be held sometime in August.

Don Rickman and Scott Stewart won the Low Gross of the Sunday version of this event shooting 136. Don and Scott have won the low-gross of this event for, at least, four straight years!. That's as far back as records are kept (website). It wouldn't surprise me if they won it also in years prior to 1997. The Low Gross winners on Thursday were Mike Hartford and Brian Teaff with a score of 135.

  • Thursday Group - Slow Play Policy --

The Thursday Section of the TPMGC has offered to cooperate with the new marshaling policy at Torrey Pines by providing the marshals with our starting times sheet and encouraging their feedback to identify slow players. The purpose of this reporting is to identify those players who cannot keep up with the group in front of them. These slow players will be assigned later tee times in subsequent tournaments.

We realize that not all players within a foursome are slow players, but the faster players have a responsibility to see to it that the foursome keeps up with the group ahead. When that cannot be done, it means the foursome is playing too early in the morning to maintain the pace. Therefore, the solution is to give them a later starting time which usually corresponds with a slower pace.

The penalty for these players will be to assign each of them an "Earliest Starting Time" which is ONE HOUR LATER than their starting time when the offense occurred. This penalty will be IN EFFECT FOR THE NEXT SIX MONTHS. If there are no additional citations for slow play during that period, the restriction will be removed.

    ROGER LEGARE - CLAUDE GIGOUX
    THURSDAY TOURNAMENT CO-CHAIRMEN

  • City Amateur: TPMGC swept the top three of the seven Open flights at the 200 City Am. Reigning club champion Mike Hartford is now also the San Diego City Champion. He scored a 282 (6-under) with rounds of 71 (South), 68 (North), 69 (Balboa), and 74 (South), beating Russ Bloom and TPMGC member Vic Zayas by three shots. In the First Flight, TPMGC member Robert Harutunian won by one with a 292. In the Second Flight, Eric Price, also a Torrey Pines member, shot 281 to win by six shots. In the Senior divisions, fellow member Bruce Andrews won the Third Flight by one shot with a 215. In the Super Senior division, TPMGC Board member Jim Kerr shot 219 and beat Chuck Tuller in a playoff in the Second Flight. Former club president Denny Esh tied for first place in the Fifth Flight (Senior) with 204, but lost the playoff to Ronald Nolf of Vista Valley. Congratulations to you all on a fine performance!!

  • Torrey and Balboa Greens Fees Up: Greens fees for Torrey Pines and Balboa Park, 18-hole and 9-hole golf courses will increase as of July 1st. In the case of Torrey Pines, the increase will only affect city residents and the twilight rate for county residents, whereas visitors fees will remain unchanged.

MAY 2000
  • Sanderson Charity: The tournament took place on 5/20 (South) and 5/21 (North) under marginal green's conditions (recent aerification). The format, "Torrey Pines Eclectic" provided for aggresive play and was well received by most players. However, out of 156 available spots only 136 members signed up to participate. Low-Gross winner was Don Rickman with a 64. Flight winners were Rob Phillips, 62; Melvin Servi, 56; Paul Latchford, 54; and David Perlow, 55. There were two aces scored during this event: Scott Herdman on #8 South (6-iron) on Saturday, and Chris McCann on #3 North on Sunday. Check the Sunday Schedule for final results, and the tournament report for scoring details.

  • Thursday Tournaments: New Low Gross policy is implemented for the Thursday subsidized, a.k.a. monthly, tournaments:

    1. Only MT (subsidized) Tournaments will have Low Gross Prizes.

    2. In the past, all players were considered for both Low Gross and Low Net prizes. Now a player or team (2 or 4 players) will have to indicate whether he/they wish to compete for Low Gross when they enter a chit or call for a time. If they do not so designate, they will be considered for Low Net prizes only.

    3. Players who have indicated on the submitted chit or phone reservation that they intend to compete for Low Gross prizes will be identified by the symbol *LG following their name on the Start Time/Shotgun Position sheet that is posted in the lounge and club's web page.

    4. Players who have indicated that they are competing for Low Gross Prizes will be competing for a pot which is made up of their entry fees plus the percentage of the Club Subsidy that the number of Low Gross entrants represents in the total number of entered contestants.

      Roger Legare
      Thursday Tournament Co-chairman

  • President Cup: Chris McCann is the 2000 President's Cup Champion. He beat Eric Groessl, Alvin Nagata, and Dallas Creech in the flight winner's playoff. Chris shot net 140 (4-under) last weekend to win the Vice-President's Flight, and then net 72 (even) in the playoff. Congratulations!

  • Auld Course: Former Torrey Pines Golf courses Operations Manager John Walter indicated that the Auld Course is scheduled to open by mid-November. John retired from his position at Torrey (with the City of San Diego) to dedicate himself full-time to the Auld Course project.

  • May General Meeting: This month's General Meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 17th, 7pm. All members are encouraged to attend. There will be at Putting and Pitching contest preceding the meeting, starting at 6pm. As usual, there will be free drinks and a a raffle of golf equipment and apparel. New members attending the meeting are entitled to one free raffle ticket.

APRIL 2000
  • Thursday Schedule: The tournament schedule for the month of April has been altered, placing the Spring Fiesta in the last two Thursdays of the month. Please call Claude Gigoux (619-223-3673) if you have any questions. I was unaware of the change, that's why the old schedule had remained on line. The corrected schedule is now in place.

  • Another Private Course: According to GOLF Magazine sources, the company Starwood Development reached an agreement with Bing Crosby's family to name its San Diego property The Crosby Estate at Rancho Santa Fe. It will include the Crosby National GC, designed by Fred Couples and Brian Curley. No dates or schedule were included in the press release.

MARCH 2000
  • Jim Allen, the new Golf Operations Manager, is now fully established in his position, replacing John Walter. Jim attended our March monthly board meeting (the board meets on the third Tuesday of every month) and conveyed to us some of his ideas regarding the golf courses, operations, etc. Here's a list of some of some of his comments:

    • Pace of Play: He's set to improve pace of play at Torrey Pines. His goal is NOT to try to improve pace of play to sneak in more rounds/revenue, but to make rounds more enjoyable to everyone. His program to achieve his goals will involve work from all fronts. The rough will be cut down, fairways widened and areas between tees and fairways made smaller. Marshals will be more visible and there will be monitoring stations, or check-points, to track pace of play throughout the courses. He expects the Men's and Women's clubs to do their part when they play their tournaments.

    • Course Maintenance: Greens will be mowed every day, and there will be about 12 pin placements which will be rotated in order to minimize wear and tear of certain parts of the greens. There will be a tree nursery program to replace some of the trees that are dying. Among those trees that will have to be replaced are the huge pine indicating 150-yds on #7 South (right side) and the last eucalyptus on the right side of #14 South. Those trees are a very relevant part of their corresponding hole, coming into play more often than not.

    • Phone Reservation System: Still not quite up the speed. There are some glitches to be ironed out. The goal is to have a dedicated number for Balboa Park GC, and use the current number, 570-1234, for both, Balboa AND Torrey.

    • Five-Year-Plan: There will be a meeting on 4/6/2000 that will go deeper into this subject. Jim inherited this plan from John Walter. It seems the final plan will have to be presented to the City Council sometime in May. Stay tuned. Jim's position is that revenue will have to come from non-resident fees. Non-residents fees will have to provide for capital improvements. For example, the greens at Torrey will need to be re-built eventually, and the City is interested developing another golf property. Money for these projects will have to come from non-resident fees. Jim is a firm believer in "muni" golf and fully supports Men's and Women's clubs. He does not foresee any outside interest taking over the golf operations at Torrey Pines.

Jim is receptive of comments and ideas. Yours will be welcome

  • City Amateur: The entry forms will be available on May 1st, 2000 at Torrey and Balboa. Jim Allen will be the Tournament Director. Former TPMGC president Hal Boston will manage the Championship Flight, as he's been doing in previous years. One noticeable change from last year: the Championship Flight will be playing Balboa Park GC on one of the rounds.

  • Handicap: Members don't seem to get it. You must post your score AND turn in a duly filled score card EVERY TIME you play a round at Torrey. The score cards MUST have the following information: Name, SCGA#, Date, Signatures, Tees Played. You MUST post the ADJUSTED score. If you play a round on a course other than Torrey Pines, you post the score at that course and there is no need to turn in a score card. However, if you do not have time or forget to post your score at that course, you may post it at Torrey in the "book" (not the computer), and deposit your card in the box by the computer. Come on, guys, it's not that complicated. Dallas Creech(619-229-9317), our Handicap Chairman, informed that if a member commits two (posting) penalties within a THREE-MONTH period (please note the correction ... it was posted as "2-month period" a few days ago), he'll get one penalty round.

  • Double-Dipping: One more time --> If you sign up to play the Thursday Monthy (subsidized) tournament, DO NOT sign up to play the Sunday Tournament, and viceversa. You can sign up for either, but not both.

  • Membership: We are 1,112 members. Renewals: 963. New Members: 149.

  • Sanderson Charity: The May tournament is a two-day competition. The format is Torrey Pines Eclectic: play 36 holes (Saturday on the South, Sunday on the North), take the best-10 par 4 holes, best-4 par-5 holes and best-4 par-3 holes. There will be NET and GROSS categories. The sign-up for this event will be on Saturday, April 15th, 6AM, Torrey lounge. Remember that the entry fee for this event is a bit higher than in other subsidized events because part of the proceedings go into two Junior World scholarships on behalf of Flo and Grady Sanderson.

FEBRUARY 2000
  • Mike Hartford, our current Club Champion, shot a 67 on the North Course at the Thursday 2/24 monthly tournament and, oh surprise, won Low Gross prize. Whoa!

  • World Match Play: You think you need more distance off the tee? Think again. Darren Clarke beat Tiger Woods 4&3 in spite of being outdriven by 30 to 35 yards most of the day. But Clarke missed only one fairway all day, and hit his approach shots first. He also putted the lights out in the afternoon. In the final match, Clarke was 1-3-4 on the par-3's (Clarke 1-under, Woods 3-under), 1-2-4 on the par-5's (Clarke 3-under, Woods 4-under), but on the par-4's Clarke was 7-0-11. Woods did not win a single par-4 hole of the 18 par-4's they played. Clarke was 7-under on the par-4's, whereas Woods was 2-over. In the afternoon round, Clarke did not birdie any of the three par-5's they played.

  • 2000 Buick Invitational: The most successful in attendance in its history. Record TV ratings above 8.0 (beat the NBA game on Sunday), record revenue generated, record media credentials issued. Tiger who?

  • New Golf Operations Manager: John Walter is leaving 2/29/2000. His replacement, Jim Allen, is already working with John so the transition is done smoothly. Jim is a PGA Class A professional who previously worked at Soule Park, Ojai, and Los Robles in Thousand Oaks. Welcome aboard, Jim!

  • Sunday Tournament Rained-Out: It will be re-scheduled to a future date. No word on when yet. Stay tuned.

    ============

  • GAC Meeting: New Date and Location : The GAC Meeting originally scheduled for February 17th has been rescheduled to February 24th, 7:00PM at the Balboa Park Golf Course Clubhouse.

JANUARY 2000
  • Thursday Schedule Correction: In order to accomodate a Torrey Pines GC previous commitment, the Thursday tournament on February 24th will be on the North course, instead of the South course as originally scheduled.

  • Sunday March Tournament: The sign-up for this tournament will be via mail-in, to avoid confusion and conflict with the Buick Invitational. When you submit the entry form to be included in the February newsletter, do NOT send the entry fees along with it. The entry fees will be paid on the day of the tournament, upon checking in. The Tournament Chairman for this event is Bill Pultz.

  • Buick Invitational: The courses will close to the public on Wednesday, February 2nd, at 1pm to get them ready for the tournament. Divot crews will go out on 2/3 and 2/4 to work on the fairways (call Miguel Castillo at Torrey if you want to be part of the Divot Crew).

  • John Walter's Last Day: John Walter last day at Torrey will be, unless unexpected developments, Tuesday 2/29/2000. John spent 12 years at Torrey as Manager. He turned the courses from "embarrassing" to "outstanding" shape during his tenure started in August 1988.

  • Next GAC Meeting: It will take place on 2/17/2000 at the Santa Fe Room (Balboa Park, by the Aerospace Museum) at 7pm. The main issue will be the 5-year Plan. Those who didn't get to speak at the last 5-year Plan meeting (held on 1/13/2000) will be given a chance to do so at this meeting.

  • Prize Accounts: Wanna know how much you have on your account? Now you can do it on-line (see club's home page). You can request a certificate via e-mail, but the certificate will still be sent to you by Jack Petrick via US Mail.

  • Courses Re-rated: Both courses were re-rated and re-sloped by the SCGA. These are the new ratings. Notice the ratings on the North Course from the new Tournament tees. The new tees on the North will be used on 1/24/200 for the PGA Class "A" Pro qualifier for the Buick Invitational. The rating/slope information is also posted on the TPMGC bulletin board:

  • Sign-up for February (Sunday) Tournament: Since January (Sunday) Tournament will be played on 1/29/2000, the sign-up date for the February tournament will be on Saturday, 01/22/2000, 6:00AM, Torrey Pines lounge.

  • January General Meeting: The meeting will take place on 01/19/2000 at 7pm at the lounge at Torrey Pines. Make sure to attend to voice your opinions and to find out "from the horse's mouth" what's the status on the Usage Permit issued by the City for the club to hold its weekly and monthly tournaments. As usual, there will be a raffle of golf apparel and equipment at the end of the meeting ($1 per raffle ticket). If you are a new TPMGC member, make sure you get your ONE complimentary raffle ticket.

  • "John Walter's" Report: The report John Walter was told to put together by the Natural Resources Subcommitte for the City Council will be presented on 01/13/2000 at 7:00pm at Balboa Park - Santa Fe Room (same room where the Golf Advisory Council meets). Public is invited to attend, but there will be no public speaking at the meeting. However, the TPMGC and other local golf-related institutions were invited to have a representative to address the committee. Bill Pultz will speak on behalf of our club. This 5-year-plan report will have direct effect on the survival of tee times for our club. Even though you will not be able to speak, I encourage you to attend the meeting to show that our club is really interested in the outcome.

  • Schedule Change: You may have noticed that the January Sunday Tournament (Two-Best Balls of Foursome) will take place on Saturday, January 29th, North Course, instead of January 23rd. The change was due to a scheduling conflict with Torrey Pines. Tee times are already posted. Call Mark Doyle for cancellations (858-270-5655). The rest of the schedule for 2000 is also posted. The wallet-size cards will be send to you with the January newletter.
