DECEMBER 2001
- The Perez Boys - Update -- Pat Perez
won the PGA Tour Qualifying School tournament shooting a 408
(67-68-63-70-65-72; 27-under) through the 108-hole ordeal. He's now a PGA
TOUR pro and most likely will see him play at the Buick Invitational this
February at Torrey Pines. This week, Pat's teacher Mike Owen (Torrey pro)
was also his caddie. Brother Mike didn't make the top-35, finishing at 437
in a tie for 151 place. Of course having both sons play in the finals of
the Q-School puts now pressure on Tony Perez, who's expected to do well
in the club's Sunday Xmas Scramble in a couple of weeks. :-). Congrats to
the Perez family!
|
NOVEMBER 2001
- The Perez Boys -- The PGA TOUR is holding the annual six-round
finals of the Q-School this week. The top-35 (and ties) players get a TOUR
card. Among the players that made the finals are the Perez boys, Pat and Mike.
They are former members of the TPMGC and sons of long-time member Tony Perez
. There was an extensive article in the SD-UT about them last week. As I'm
writing this, three of the six rounds have been completed at the Bear Lakes
Country Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Pat is leading the tournament at
18-under (67-68-63), two shots ahead of Tommy Armour III. Mike is struggling,
and is currently tied for 144th (total 167 players) with 75-75-70 (4-over).
- Club Officers for 2002 -- At the General Meeting of 11/14
several Board members were re-elected, and at a special Board Meeting on
11/17 new club officers for 2002 were elected: President: Dale Peterson,
Vice-President: Dean Creech, Secretary: Art Stromberg, Treasurer: Hank
Johnson.
- Thursday Turkey Shoot -- Those who played and scored net
78 or lower can pick up their supermaket certificate from Fred Baebler
at the lounge at Torrey Pines on November 29, between 11am and 1pm. If you
can't pick it up by then, it'll be mailed to you.
====================
- Prize Account Information - Changes -- As previously
announced, prize money won in club tournaments as of November 1st, 2001
can ONLY be spent at the Torrey Pines Pro-Shop. In consequence, Tournament
Awards Chairman Jack Petrick has set up two databases, one
with account balances up to 10/31/01, and another one with account balances
starting on 11/01/01. Again, money won before 11/01/01 can still be spent
at any of the golf stores listed by Jack. Certificates to withdraw money
from this account are green. Certificates for money won as of 11/01/01
are colored yellow and will have the member's account balance printed
on the back. As usual, account balances can be checked on line. There are TWO
different links from the home page now, one for the
OLD
account and one for the
NEW account.
====================
- New ID Cards (Torrey/Balboa) -- New City Resident Cards
are being issued at Torrey and Balboa. These are "picture ID cards" to be
presented to the Starter at Torrey or Balboa to get the City resident discount
on greens fees.
The annual cards cost $12 and any of the following proofs of residence MUST
be presented at the time of buying the card: drivers license, DMV motor vehicle
registration, school or military ID, or a tax bill on a city residence. Note
that utility bills or rent information are no longer proof of residence.
For inquiries about this subject you should call: Torrey Pines (858-552-1784),
or Balboa (619-235-1184).
- General Meeting - November 14th, 7pm -- Final General
Meeting of the year. There will be elections to renew the Board of Directors.
It'll take place at the TP lounge, as usual. There will be free refreshments,
and the traditional raffle of golf merchandise will take place at the end
of the meeting (raffle tix are $1 each). Plan on attending if you want to
know details about the new City plan for Torrey Pines and the status of the
new South Course, or if you just want to voice your opinion on club matters.
|
OCTOBER 2001
- Thursday Turkey Shoot -- The Thursday Turkey Shoot will be a
6:45 shotgun start on the North Course on November 15th. To enter this
tournament YOU MUST HAVE RENEWED YOUR MEMBERSHIP FOR 2002.
Sign-up for this event will be on November 1, using the chits in the box
or anytime BEFORE Saturday, November 3rd by phone at 619-276-0607, or by email
to rlegare@san.rr.com.
====================
- October (Sunday) Tournament -- TP Tournament Coordinator is
no longer using the "split tees" format for the North Course. Due to
daylight restrictions this format is no longer viable. Therefore, there
have been substantial changes in the tee
times schedule for this event. Tournament Chairman Walt Block had
to convert the "split tees" originally signed up to regular (consecutive)
times. We'll start at (darkness) 6:42 (and I'll be in the first group ...
with a flashlight) on #1 tee. There still are a few spots open, so call
Walt to get them, or to put your name on the waiting list.
|
SEPTEMBER 2001
- September Stableford (Sunday) -- Played on the North
course under very dry (fast fairways) conditions. The Low Gross was
Don Rickman with +14 points (Don shot a
smooth 66, starting his round with four 3's in a row: eagle, birdie,
par, birdie). First flight net winner was Terry
Mason with +20 points, and Second Flight winner was
Glenn Parker also with +20 points.
As a side note: 7 (seven) players were DQ's for not having two signatures
on their score card, and 31 out of 111 score cards had some form of non-fatal
error (bad arithmetic and failure to calculate adjusted score were the most
common).
- Fall Frolic (Thursday) -- It will take place on
October 25th. It'll be a shotgun start, at 6:45am, NORTH course.
- Prize Fund Changes --
All prize money won in club tournaments as of November 1st, 2001
will have to be spent at the Torrey Pines Golf Course Pro-Shop.
Members will still be able to spend prize money won PRIOR to November 1st,
2001 at the various golf stores listed by Prize Fund Chairman
Jack Petrick. There will be
two parallel prize fund databases: one for prize money won up to 10/31/01,
and another one for prize money won starting on 11/01/01. Both databases
will be accessible through the web page in the same manner as members
can now inquiry about their individual accounts.
====================
- Matt Lees -- The Aceman -- After 32 years playing golf, fellow
member Matt Lees finally made a hole-in-one ... and then another one ... and
then another one ! ... in the same round ! ... in the same nine ! It all started
on the back nine at Mission Bay GC. He aced
#11 (132 yards, "easy" 8-iron), then aced #13 (146 yards, 7-iron), and before
his foursome could finish the celebration he slam-dunked another ace on #14
(111 yards, pitching-wedge). The expectations on the 15th tee must've been
tremendous. Who is going to play "skins" with someone that aces three out of
four holes :) !!?? Way to go, Matt!!
- Club Championships -- Our new club champion is Scott Stewart.
He beat Bob Stermon 4&3 in the final match. In the other flights (1 through 5) the
winners were: Kevin Herde, Melvin Servi, Walt Block, Jon
Gabrielson, and Edward Wong. Congratulations to all!
- Sunday Stableford --- Please notice
a bit of re-shuffling of tee times. We were
informed that we did not get the 8:30am slot, but instead
we got 6:30 and 6:38. I had to move some foursomes around to comply with the
schedule change. We'll be starting off both tees on the North course.
- October Sunday Tournament --- Sign-up day is Saturday,
8 September, 2001. Tournament Chairman is Walt Block.
|
AUGUST 2001
- South Course Renovation Update -- According to Course Manager Jim
Allen work is right on schedule. "It's more than I expected", said Jim, referring
to the quality and intensity of the work being done. "The course
will be very, very difficult from the Championship Tees. It could be extended to 7,400
yards". The 11th hole, for example, could be played as long as 250 yards (back tees to
a back hole location). This will probably slow down the pace of play, so they may
change spacing between tee times when the new South opens. There will be 18 temporary
greens as of next week (8/27),
and some new greens are already in place: #11, #12, #13 and #14.
Rees Jones, who also did work on the Atlanta Athletic Club
(which hosted last week's PGA Championship) gives his final approval before each
green is deemed "ready". The opening of the new
course is tentative and will depend on several factors, weather being one of the most
crucial ones. "We're looking at anytime between late November and early January", said
Jim.
Jim also reported that the south parking lot (used to be in front of the old Lodge)
should be available again sometime next week, and The Lodge is scheduled to open sometime
in late January 2002.
- SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP (Thursday) -- DUE TO COURSE RENOVATION WE ARE
LIMITED TO 128 PLAYERS ON SEP 6 AND 64 PLAYERS ON SEP 13. PLAY WILL BE ON THE NORTH COURSE
ON BOTH DATES. WE WILL BE TEEING OFF ON BOTH THE #1 AND #10 TEES FROM 6:14 TO 8:14 ON
SEP 6 AND FROM 6:14 TO 7:10 ON SEP 13 (DAYLIGHT PERMITTING).
SENIORS MUST BE 55 OR OLDER. NON-SENIORS MAY PLAY ON SEP 6 ON A SPACE AVAILABLE BASIS,
BUT THEY WILL NOT COMPETE IN THE TOURNAMENT AND WILL NOT HAVE TO PAY THE $7 ENTRY FEE.
ELIGIBILITY FOR PLAY ON SEP 13 WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE LOWEST NET SCORES IN EACH
FLIGHT AND WILL BE LIMITED TO SENIORS.
Roger Legare and Claude Gigoux (Tournament Chairmen - Thursday Group)
====================
- Club Championships - Brackets -- The brackets with
the starting eight matches for each of the six flights are on line
(see the club's home page and click on
the specific flight).
Each match has an assigned tee time. Please notice: a) All matches will
be played on the North Course due to the renovation on the South Course;
b) On 8/18 (first day of matches), flights 3,4, and 5 will start on #10
tee; c) After that first day, all subsequent matches will start on the
1st tee; d) The semifinal and final matches will take place on the same
day (Saturday 8/25), so those players will go 36 holes on one day.
====================
- Club Championships - Tee Times -- Tee times are on
line. We'll use "split tees". The flights are: Championship (3.2 and below);
First (3.2 - 5.8); Second (5.9 - 7.6); Third (7.7 - 10.3); Fourth
(10.4 - 14.0); and Fifth (14.1 and above).
- September Sunday Tournament - Stableford -- Due to the
renovation of the South Course the T.P. Tournament Coordinator is trying
to accomodate on the North course some tournaments previously allocated to
the South. We're able to move our Club Championships entirely to the North,
and also the Sunday September tournament (Stableford). However, due to the
demand to play this (North) course, we had to settle for less tee times.
Torrey Pines has been scheduling tournaments on the North with split
tees; i.e., players teeing off on #1 and #10.
When I carry out the sign-up for the Stableford, on Saturday, August
4th at 6am, TP lounge I'll have a sheet with tee times available from
6:49am to 8:30am, with 8-minute separation, for tee #1 and tee #10. At any
given tee time, two TPMGC groups will be teeing off. This system allows for 28
foursomes, instead of the usual 37. When the South course is completed and
fully playable, we should be going back to the usual consecutive times format.
Ah! The entry fee for the Stableford will be $15 (instead of the usual $10)
payable upon checking in on tournament day.
The extra $5 will go to a fund for a memorial for former TPMGC board member
Hugh Chindlund, who passed away over a year ago.
If you have any questions please send me
email.
Martin "Rick" Olivera -- September (Sunday) Trnmt. Chmn.

JULY 2001
- More on the South Course Renovation -- Plans keep
changing, according to Jim Allen. The swale on #13 will be left alone,
and not filled up with dirt as previously reported. #18 will get a new
set of tees adding 40 yards to the hole. #9 will also be a lot longer,
with a set of tees up on top of the hill behind the current tees. Jim
promised to give us a copy of the plans as they become more definite.
Work began yesterday, 7/24/01. They'll start with the back-9, holes
#12, #13 and #14 getting renovated first. When the amount of temporary
greens reaches 9, Jim said that there will be a considerable reduction
of greens fees to play the South. Also, they'll implement "split tees"
on the North (18-hole players teeing off on #1 and on #10), which will
eliminate 9-hole play throughout the duration of the South renovation
project. Tee times for the TPMGC will also be affected. Accoring to Jim
Allen, work is expected to be completed by November and the course should
be playable soon thereafter.
====================
- USGA - Rules of Amateur Status-- The USGA approved a
re-written version of the Rules of Amateur Status, to be
effective Jan. 1, 2002. Among other changes, the new version allows an
amateur to accept equipment from manufacturers without jeopardizing his or
her status.

JUNE 2001
- Club Championships -- CHANGES!!-- The Club Championships,
played in the month of August over three weekends, will have some changes
in venue and schedule
this year. Due to the re-construction of the South Course, the Golf Courses
Operations office graciously offered the club to play our matches on the North
Course.
In the past, one qualifying round (higher flights) and the first match (all
flights) were played on the North, but then all subsequent matches through
the finals were played on the South. This year everything will be played
on the North. But there is another MAJOR CHANGE: The semi-final and final
matches on each flight will be played on the North Course on the SAME DAY.
So on Saturday 8/25 the finalists will play 36 holes. This 36-hole day is
because we need to accomodate the TP schedule: they have back-to-back
shotguns on the North on Sunday 8/26.
One other change: Since the entire Club Championships will
be played on the North, the Thursday tournaments in August will be played
on the South Course.
Entry forms for the Club Championships
will be included in the upcoming Newsletter, which you'll receive in early
July (you can also read it or download it from this web site). If you have any
questions contact Steve Larson, the Club Championships Tournament
Chairman at tppres@san.rr.com or
858-560-0447.
====================
- More on Torrey Pines Re-construction-- Work on the South
Course will start on 7/24/01, right after the Junior World Championships.
The overall change will be that all 18 greens will be flattened and enlarged
an average of 2,000 sq.ft. Sixty new bunkers will be added, and tee boxes
will be added or enlarged for new Championship tees. The course will play
to a par-70 for the Buick (but this may change).
Here's a hole-by-hole
description of what will be done, in addition of what's been described
above: #1: No other significant changes; #2: New tee box to
lengthen hole; #3: Green will be moved left, closer to the canyon;
#4: The entire fairway will be moved left, closer to the cliffs, and
so will the green; #5: new tee box to lengthen hole; #6: It'll
play as a par-4 for the Buick; #7: Tees further back, green moved
right, even closer to the canyon; #8: New tees further back (?!);
#9: New tees further back; #10: New tees further back;
#11: No other significant changes; #12: Will be even longer;
#13: Tees farther back. Deep swale between 150 yard marker
and green will be eliminated
(filled with dirt); #14: Green will be moved back and left;
#15: New tee boxes farther back and the green will also be moved further back
; #16: Tee box next to service house will be moved back for
longer carry over the canyon; #17: New tees further back (??), green
will be moved left, closer to the 8th green; #18: The movement of the
17th green will make room for a new set of tees that will add 40 yards to
the hole.
- New Computer-- A new computer with the EHS-2000 software
will be installed in the TP Pro-Shop on 6/29. It'll feature the touch-screen
based software provided by the SCGA which will give instant access to a
player's record, even those whose home course is not TP. Some of you probably
already saw this new system in action in other SCGA-affiliated courses. The
computer was purchased by the TPMGC.
New Greens Fees at Torrey-- The
new greens fees at Torrey Pines will be in effect as of July 1st, 2001.
We might get a break during the South Course construction, but I wouldn't
count on it. Balboa will also have new greens fees as of next month.
====================
- Sanderson Charity-- The sign-up for the Sanderson
Charity was last Saturday (6/16). There are quite a few open spots
left, starting with full foursomes at 10:28 through 11:28, and a few
single spots here and there. Entry fees for this event are $20, $10 of which
will go to scholarships for two local junior golfers on behalf of Flo and
Grady Sanderson. Contact Jim Kerr, the Tournament Chairman, if you
want to sign-up: 858-273-3911, or
jimkerr@pacbell.net. The tournament will take place on Sunday, July
22nd, on the South Course.
====================
- Torrey Pines Re-construction-- The City Council approved
reconstruction of Torrey Pines. It'll involve re-building of all greens,
addition of bunkers, and enlarging/adding tee boxes. The architect in charge
will be Rees Jones. The Century Club will pay for the work ($3 million), and
the City will reimburse $950,000 at the City's convenience. Work is to start
immediately and the courses are expected to be ready for the 2002 Buick
Invitational in February.
- City Amateur-- City Champion is Larry Correa, a San
Diego State alumnus. He birdied #18 South after hitting a flop shot to within
tap-in distance, from the 1st tee. He'd flown the green with a 4-iron
from 200 yards out. The birdie was what he needed to finish the round with a
70, for a total of 282 (6-under), enough to beat Dave Schnider by one shot.
The
TPMGC took first and second place in the First Flight:
Robert Troup shot a net total of 280 (69-72-71-68) to win the
flight, and James Mintun took second place with a net 293.
Congratulations Robert !!
====================
- Torrey Pines Greens Fees-- (6/7/01)- The San Diego City
Council approved the new greens fees for Torrey Pines this week. All but
one councilmember voted to raise the greens fees to $29/$34 (Resident,
weekday/weekend), and $95/$100 (Non-resident, weekday/weekend).
The new greens fees will be in effect as of July 1st, 2001.
- Senior City Amateur Open-- Fellow member, former club
president and eight-times club champion (in a span of 21 years!) Bob Imlay is the new Senior City Amateur
Champion. Bob shot a final round even par 72 (35-37) for a final
score of 221 thus beating Jim Saivar by one shot, and fellow club member
Mike Riley by two. Bob's round included four birdies and four bogies,
playing the South Course from the very tips. Another fellow club member,
Bob Stermon played in the same group with Imlay and Riley. All three
started the final round tied for the lead at 149. Stermon shot 75 and ended
up tied for fourth place at 224.
In the 3rd Flight, Larry St John of
Torrey Pines won with a net score of 212. Congratulations Bob and Larry!

MAY 2001
- General Meeting of 5/16/01-- It was attended by a total of
35 members (13 of which were Board Members). Attendance was surprisingly low
given the fact that the 5-Year-Plan was going to be discussed.
- Jim Allen's Report--
- 5-Year Plan-- The City Council will meet on
5/29 (tentative date ... call the office at Torrey Pines for
the latest info on this). They'll vote on the greens fees portion of
the 5-Year Plan. The Council's decision will be in effect as of 7/1/2001.
- New Phone Reservation System-- It has been in place since
5/22/2001. Same phone number (570-1234), same calling time (5am, 7 days in
advance).
- New Sewage Line-- It will be under construction in September.
It will run from 16th tee South to the Glider Port. It should not affect play.
- Membership Renewal Changes-- The renewal period will be
September-October 2001. As of November 1st, members who wish to renew will
have to pay "new member" fees ($90), instead of the regular renewal fees
($65). Renewal applications will be included in the August, September and
October newsletters. In case you haven't noticed, the newsletters have been
available on-line, in addition to being mailed to all members every month.
Also, you can fill out a renewal form on
line, print it, then send it with your check. No excuse to be late in
renewing your membership.
If you are planning on leaving the club, make sure you withdraw all your
winnings from your account BEFORE 3/31/02. After that date, all
winnings left unclaimed will become part of the club's funds.
- 5-Year Plan & Prize Fund-- Winnings on account until the
5-year plan passes will not have to be spent only at
the Torrey Pines Pro Shop. However, winnings on account AFTER
the 5-year plan passes will have to be spent at the Torrey Pines Pro
Shop.
- Thursday SCGA Better-Ball-- The monthly Thursday tournament
for the month of June is undersubscribed. Get in touch with
Roger Legare if you want to sign
up for this event.
====================
- Member-Guest -- As of this writing (5/3/01) there
still are a few openings to complete the field. Just so there is no
misunderstandings, the $360 per team INCLUDES:
- Greens fees: average city resident ($26) and non-resident ($60),
two days --> $43x2= $86/player.
- Cart fees: $10 each day --> $20/player.
- Tee Prize: (beige ziper-front wind jacket with torrey tree) -->
$40/player.
- Luncheon (after Sunday's shotgun) --> $25/player.
- Range balls (both days) --> $0
The sub-total is $171. If you add an extra $9 per player for a
prize fund, then it's $180 per player, or $360 per team.
Note that in addition to the $9/player ($1,296 sub-total), the club
subsidizes this event with an additional $1,500. The total ($2,796) is
spent in 1st place trophies (approx. $200) and scrip drawn on the Torrey
Pines Pro-Shop. 25% of the field (18 teams) will be "in the money".
- Elvis Ray Musgrave (1921-2001) --
Fellow club member passed away on Thursday, April 26th, from a heart attack
while playing the North course. Born in Springfield, Illinois, he worked as
an engineer for the Naval Oceanographic Systems Command (NOSC) in Pt. Loma
for 30 years and was active in Alcoholics Anonymous, with 31 years sobriety.
He was also a Pearl Harbor survivor and a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors
Association. Resident of Chula Vista, Mr Musgrave is survived by his son,
James, daughters Candy and Lisa, stepdaughters, Shyer and Susan, four
grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. Three sisters also survive him,
twin Eunice, Eve and June.

APRIL 2001
- General Meeting -- This year's May General Meeting
will take place on Wednesday, May 16th, 7pm. There will be a
putting contest prior to the meeting. I encourage everyone to attend.
The City's 5-year plan will have an impact on our club's access to the
golf courses. For those interested, I'm sure there will be a discussion
about this subject. The usual raffle of golf goodies will take place at
the end of the meeting.
- 2001- City Amateur -- The entry forms will be available at
Torrey Pines and Balboa Park on May 1st. However, I've been allowed by
Tournament Director Jim Allen
to also have them on line in a special page dedicated to this tournament.
You can print out and fill in the forms, but you'll still have to take
them to Torrey Pines or Balboa with your entry fee, and they will NOT
be accepted in
either place prior to May 1st. Information about the different
divisions are included in the respective entry form. The City Am page is in:
www.golfsd.com/CITY/sd_cityam.
- New Automated Phone Reservation System -- This long-awaited,
even-longer-announced phone reservation system will kick off on May 21st
for reservations for May 29th, according to Jim Allen. It'll still the
same phone number
(858-570-1234), and you need to use the reservation card number you
currently have (if you have one). The system will work for both, Balboa and
Torrey, and the dialing will start at 5am, as usual, until the 5-year plan
passes (it'll go to 7pm calling time after that).
- Membership -- As of April 17th, we are 1,141 members,
187 of which are new. We are the second largest golf club in Southern
California affiliated with the SCGA.
|
MARCH 2001
- Five-Year Plan -- The Five-Year Plan "will be
discussed and reviewed at a meeting of the Natural Resources and Culture
Committee of the San Diego City Council on April 18, 2001 at 9:00 a.m.
(please note the time change).
The meeting will be held on the Twelfth Floor in the City Administration
Building, 202 C Street, San Diego, California."
Given that this plan will directly affect the usage of the Torrey Pines
Golf Courses by our club, it is very important that those members
who can attend this meeting do so. A large attendance may show the
Natural Resources and Culture Committee our concerns about the plan.
Call your golfing buddies and please attend this meeting.

JANUARY 2001
- 1/18/01 General Meeting --
Jim Allen, Courses
Operations Manager, informed the attendants that the courses will close
either on 1/30 or 1/31 to prepare them for the Buick Invitational,
which takes place the week of 2/5 through 2/11. On Monday 2/12 the tee times
will be assigned as in the past, "first-come-first-served", but the management
will specify a place for the sign-up in order to avoid the mess that happened
on the deck by the Starter's window last year. Parking will be a problem
for this year's Buick. Preferred Parking will be at the Glider Port,
but daily parking will be in Del Mar and by Sea World, with buses shuttling
people back and forth. Along the same subject, Jim indicated that there
will be a parking structure built with the new Lodge and that structure
will have available free parking spots for players. He also said that
the new automated phone reservation system will hopefully be operational
by 4/1/01. The lines will open at 7pm, instead of 5am as currently implemented.
Pat Segawa, also present at the meeting, informed the audience that
the SCGA re-rated the Balboa Park course: 71.1/124 (from 67.5/114)
from the White tees. This makes Balboa comparable to Torrey North
(70.8/125, White tees), but still easier than Torrey South from the Red
tees (72.0/127). (Note: Had you noticed that Torrey South from the Red
is more difficult than Torrey North from the White?).
Ron Bruck, TPMGC Membership Chairman, informed that the club has
1,044 members, 122 of which are new (since November 1st, 2000).
- New Mailing Address --
The club's new mailing address is:
