NOVEMBER 1998
  • Turkey Shoot (Sunday) Report: The results are in. The greens on the South Course were pretty quick and slick, and the hole location were "Buick-like" on some of them. The reason: the greens were rolled last week for the San Diego County Open, so we inherited the greens' conditions from it. It was great to be able to putt those greens, I only wish I had had more time to adjust to them (3-putted five times ... ugh!). The scores were pretty high on both flights. "Turkey Certificates" were awarded to most net-76 or better (first flight) and most net-77 or better on the second flight. Not very many happy faces came into the lounge after the round. Only one group had all four players get a certificate: John Andrews (who at 88 years old shot net 73), E Jimenez, P Shea, and T Stoddard. The best round was by Bob Stermon, with a neat gross 34-40=74. But he bogeyed the last 3 holes, when the fast greens caught up with him. Bob was playing in my foursome and was fun to watch, really. He had it at 3-under through 10 holes, after playing #8 (birdie), #9 (holed a 60-yard pitch for eagle), and #10 (birdie from within a foot) in 4-under-par. He was in pace to break 70. In spite of the usual slow play, the last group was (barely) able to finish, playing in 5h10'.

  • NOTES from the General Meeting of 11/18/98:

    • Report by John Walter, Golf Courses Manager:

      • In spite some minor problems with greens #10 and #15 (South), both courses had good take on overseeding.

      • Buick Invitational: Pro-Am and Sky Boxes were sold out. Volunteers need to call 281-4653.

      • Four Torrey holes were ranked in the Top-50-Toughest played last year on the PGA TOUR: #7 South (ranked #21), #4 South (#35), #12 South (#43), and #7 North (#50). (Question: Why is then #4 ranked the handicap 1 hole by the SCGA, instead of #7?).

      • North Course: The new tees are being finished. The course will measure almost 7000 yards from the back tees when these new tees are used. There will be a new tee box on #6, a bit lower than the current one at 200 yards (almost never used). This new tee box will be at approximately 180 yards.

    • Board Elections: The following members were elected to the board for a 2-year term:

      • Hal Boston
      • Joe Burwell
      • Hugh Chindlund
      • Howard DeYoung
      • Denny Esh
      • John Hoffman
      • Steve Larson

    • Membership: Slowly climbing up. Last year (97-98) we finished at almost 1300 members. As of today (11/20/98) we are almost 1000. Renewals keep coming in. As of December 1st, renewing membership will cost $90, just like a new-membership. Remember to let me know if you change your address, since the 98-99 membership cards will be sent by the SCGA directly to you with the January FORE magazine. I provide the SCGA with your up-to-date addresses.

    ====================

OCTOBER 1998
  • NOTES from the Board Meeting of 10/27/98:

    • Report by John Walter, Golf Courses Manager:

      • South Course: Overseeding complete. Tee boxes are back to the plate markers.

      • North Course: Under continuous irrigation for seed germination. Greens were verticut and mowed, tees are forward. The PGA TOUR improvements are underway. Five new tees will sod out in the next two weeks. The bunker on #13 has been enlarged. There is a new bunker on the #5 fairway (right side). New trees were planted on #5, and between #14 and #15 fairways. Several trees will be added on the left side of #16.

      • Both Courses: Staff will focus on bunker work the next 2 weeks. New sand (twice as expensive) will be added. This type of sand is very white, fine and heavy. It'll yield "fried-egg" lies in the bank of the bunker (ugh!).

    • Next Golf Advisory Council meeting: 12/03/98 at the Santa Fe Room (Balboa Parka). Main topic: Fee proposal for FY 2000.

    • At the next General Meeting (November 18th, 7pm, Torrey lounge) there will be elections of board members for the year 1999. There will be FREE beverages and raffle tickets ($1.00/ticket. New members get one ticket for free). Plan to attend! Here's the list of candidates:

      • Hal Boston
      • Joe Burwell
      • Hugh Chindlund
      • Howard DeYoung
      • Denny Esh
      • John Hoffman
      • Steve Larson

Nominations from the floor will also be accepted.

    • During the Thursday's monthly tournament Fall Frolic, fellow member Joe Burwell ACED the 16th hole on the South Course with a slick 3-iron shot.

    • Almost 800 members have renewed their membership for the 1998-1999 year. If you haven't renewed yet, you have until November 30th. After that date, you'll be removed from the club's database. You may also want to remind your golf buddies to renew before it's too late.

    • Sign-up for the January 1999 tournament will be held at the lounge (Torrey) on Saturday, December 12th, 6am. The schedule for next year is not ready yet, so it's not known the actual date for this tournament. The format will be either Two-Better-Balls of Foursome, or Three-Better-Balls of Foursome. Tournament chairman will be Dale Peterson.

    • Tee Times for this Sunday's Three-Better-Balls of Foursome and the November's Turkey Shoot are on line.

SEPTEMBER 1998
  • NOTES from the Board Meeting of 9/15/98:

    • Report by John Walter, Golf Courses Manager:

      • South Course: Greens aerated on 9/9/98. Watering was discontinued for turf renovation (aeration and verticutting).

      • TPMGC Requests: Torrey Pines is requesting the club to modify the starting times for the Thursday tournament of 12/10/98 to make it a 6:45 shotgun to accomodate Holiday Bowl Sponsor/Media Golf tournament.

      • Pro-Kids Golf: They'd like to have a TPMGC member on their board. Please see John Walter if you are interested in becoming involved.

    • The board unanimously approved a proposal from Roger Legare and Claude Gigoux in which they request to take over the running of the Thursday tournaments. In their proposal, Roger and Claude make valid points in regards of some inefficient current procedures and propose a number of changes in order to streamline the Thursday "operation". Their proposed changes hopefully will speed up play, and eliminate no-shows and late cancellations.

    • As you know, on the next General Meeting (November 18th) there will be elections of board members for the year 1999. It's also a good opportunity to voice your opinion on club matters. Here is the slate of nominated candidates (nominations from the floor will also be accepted):

      • Hal Boston
      • Joe Burwell
      • Hugh Chindlund
      • Howard DeYoung
      • Denny Esh
      • John Hoffman
      • Steve Larson

  • November 1st, 1998 - Make-up tournament: Those who originally signed up (and didn't cancel) for the Sunday January tournament that got rained out will have priority to make the field. But these members will have to call Walt Block to confirm participation. Also, only those members who have renewed their membership for the 1998-1999 period will be elegible to be part of the field.

  • Results form the Sunday Stableford Points are on line.

  • Sign-up date for the Sunday "Turkey Shoot" is Saturday, 10/03/98, 6:00am at the Torrey lounge.

  • As a courtesy to the Torrey Pines Pro Shop, the board usually listens to monthly presentations made by members of the Shop. They inform the club, through the board, of specials in merchandise, driving range, lessons, club fitting, etc. Since there's no room in our monthly newsletter to include this information, we'll include the Men's and Women's Club Specials in the web page.

  • NOTES from the Board Meeting of 8/18/98:

    • Report by John Walter, Golf Courses Manager:

  • The results from the Hero-Bum (Sunday) July tournament are now available.
JULY 1998
  • NO MORE S.D. COUNTY RESIDENT DISCOUNT: On Friday, June 26th, 1998, the City Council voted to eliminate the San Diego County greens fees for the Torrey Pines and Balboa Park golf courses. The $12 "County Resident" cards will no longer be valid as of August 1st, 1998. No word yet as to what will happen to those who just bought or renewed their County cards.

This elimination of the County discount was brought to the City Council by Harry Mathis (Council District I). He stated that by doing this the courses would contribute an additional $420,000 to the General Fund.

  • SCGA Better Ball: Steve Brieske and Dennis Targgart won the overall by beating the "Thursday guys" Bill Wright and Jim Giubilato. They'll represent the club in the SCGA Better Ball finals.

JUNE 1998
  • City Amateur: There were 87 (of 355 total) Torrey members playing in the Open division, with 24 (of 120 total) in the Championship Flight. Our best show in this flight was Bob Stermon, who tied for 6th with a 295 (7-over). Best Torrey performers (top-5 finishers) in the other flights were: Mike Cooney (2nd, 1st flight), Patrick Kelley (5th, 2nd flight), Rich Silber (tied for 3rd, 3rd flight), Larry Olivas (3rd, 4th flight), Jake Johnson (4th, 5th flight), and Joel Erickson (tied for 5th, 5th flight).

In the Super Senior division there were 16 (of 47 total) Torrey members in the field. The best performers (top-5 finishers) were: Dick Cheney, , Champion, 1st flight; Art Dioli (2nd, 2nd flight ... lost playoff for championship), Dick McKesson (5th, 2nd flight), and John Andrews (2nd, 3rd flight ... lost playoff for championship).

So we had 18 top-5 finishers, 6 in the Open division, and 12 in the Senior and Super Senior divisions. Congratulations to you all !!

  • NOTES from the Board Meeting of 6/16/98:

    • Hero-Bum: Sign-up for this tournament took place on Saturday 6/13. There are open spots to be filled up. The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in Torrey's lounge.

    • Club Championship: This tournament will take place in August. Entry forms will be included in the July's newsletter.

    • Golf Course Report by John Walter, Golf Operations Manager:

      • Maintenance on the South Course will include verticut greens and narrowing of several fairways.

      • This month the course will host the Marvin K. Brown tournament (Junior Golf match-play competition, 6/22-6/26). In July it will host the Junior World Championships (7/6-7/10) and the USGA Public Links (07/11-07/18).

      • The North Course Irrigation Project has been postponed because the bids came in late. The project has been re-bid. Those winning the bid will have to start right away and work 12-hr days to finish by September 30th, or else start in March 1st, 1999. Some of the work co-funded by the PGA Tour will be carried out, however (back tees of #4, etc). Other PGA Tour co-funded renovation work will have to wait because it involves irrigation issues.

      • Next Golf Advisory Council meeting will be held on 8/13/98 at the usual place (Balboa Park, Santa Fe Room).

MAY 1998
  • NOTES from the General Meeting of 5/20/98:

    • The pre-meeting Pitching and Putting contests were won by John Walter (second year in a row ... he set up the tee and hole), and Matt Lees, respectively.

    • A representative from the Southern California Public Links made a presentation asking for volunteers to help during the USGA Publinx tournament that will take place on Torrey South between July 10th and 18th. They need forecaddies and van drivers for the nine days. Volunteers will get a shirt and hat as a token compensation. Please contact Hal Boston or John Walter if interested in volunteering.

    • The Pro-Shop has special rates for club fitting, golf lessons, golf cart cards, driving range cards and general merchandise for TPMGC members. They have a computerized system that compares your swing with that of one or more PGA TOUR professionals. Worth checking out some of these deals. ( Editor's Note: If there is enough interest, I can have an on-line list of weekly or monthly specials for club members).

    • There was some debate on how to improve the quality of our "Member-Guest" tournaments. Apparently this month's didn't go so well and club president Hal Boston apologized to the membership in that regard.

    • Sign-up for July's tournament will take place on Saturday, June 13th, at 6am in the usual place (by the Pro-Shop at Torrey). On that day Torrey will be busy with the second week of the City Am, so beware of the crowd.

    • Golf Course Manager's Report (by John Walter):

      • South course to be aerified on 5/27. It's a bit too close to the City Am, but the USGA required this aeriation as part of the preparation for the Public Links tournament. The North course has already been aeriated and its greens should be in great shape for the City Am. The rough will be at 2.5" on the South and up to 3" for the Junior World competitions.

      • City Am: Entries still available for Super Senior division (70+ years old)

      • Golf Advisory Council: Next meeting will be on June 4th, 7pm, at Balboa Park (Santa Fe room). Among other items: Balboa Park master plan (parking, club house, driving range ... No, the 4th hole won't be discussed).

      • Fee Increase: 18 holes will be up $1.00; Tournament Player Reservation Fee will be $5.00 weekday, $10 weekend; Senior Daily Play Fee: $10; Senior Monthly Ticket will be at $66. Look for the entire new fee schedyle in the Torrey and Balboa pages at the SDGP (www.golfsd.com) web site later in June.

      • North Course Irrigation: Bids opened today (5/21/98). Construction to start in late June. It WILL affect the Girls 15-17 Division of Junior World Championships. This work will take 90 days to complete, including cart paths.

      • PGA TOUR Suggested North Course Improvements: The TOUR will fund 50% of the work required to lengthen the course 200 yards by adding 11 new tees. To make the course more difficult for the Buick Invitational players, two fairway bunkers will also be added (#1 and #15), as well as several trees (some to replace fallen or removed trees). This championship course created by the mentioned improvements will be available for (public) tournament play, but NOT for everyday play.

      • CLUB THEFT !!!: Five set of clubs were stolen in 10 days. It's believed is a well organized group of thieves who operate smoothly (driving golf carts to the parking lot and then taking the clubs, for example). Make sure you point suspicious behavior to Torrey's management.
APRIL 1998
  • NOTES from the Board Meeting of 4/21/98:

    • The club is donating $1600 to Junior Golf, for a scholarship to that junior golfer with the best scoring average AND academic grades. The money is donated on behalf of Flo and Grady Sanderson, and comes from the proceedings of the February tournament, the Sanderson Pinehurst.

    • So you all know, the club is now SPIKELESS. This applies to ALL club's tournaments, SUNDAY and THURSDAY. If you tee off with spikes in any tournament, you WILL be DQ'd.

    • In a move to make tournaments more open to the membership, there is a consideration of changing the format of the May tournament, starting in 1999. There is a good chance that the 2-Day Member-Guest will be replaced by a 2-day major tournament not involving guests (members only). On Sunday, the second day of this major tournament, there would be a shotgun start for this event, followed by a 1-Day Member-Guest shotgun in the afternoon.

    • Good news for those unlucky with tournament lotteries:

      • If your team did NOT make the lottery for the Sunday Christmas Scramble last December, make sure you indicate that to Dan Groszkruger, the tournament chairman, somewhere in the envelope with your entry form for the next Christmas Scramble. Your team will then get preference over those who played in this tournament last December.

      • In an unanimous decision, the board decided that tournament chairmen keep a list of stand-bys from major tournaments including those players who did not make the field for that particular event. These members will then receive preference to make the field in that event the following year.

    • Dale Peterson, a long-time board meetings attendee, has been selected by the board to complete Bob Kerfoot's term on the board.

    • As customary, we will have our May General Meeting at the lounge at Torrey Pines on Wednesday May 20th, 7:00pm. The meeting will be preceeded by a chipping and putting contest, starting at 6:00pm. There will be a raffle of golf stuff at the end of the meeting. Those new members attending the meeting will receive one free raffle ticket. As usual, there will also be free beverages for all present.

    • Golf Course Report by John Walter, Golf Operations Manager:

      • Both courses are being fertilized and greens will be aerified in May (with small tines , so the effect on play will be minimal).

      • As you all know, the North Course will undergo a change in the irrigation system, and paved cart paths will be installed. This will happen between June 15th and September 30th. The course will remain open to play as much as possible throughout this period.

      • The Public Links Championship that will take place from July 10th through 18th, South Course, is getting more entries than usual. The USGA believes this is due to the popularity of Torrey Pines.

      • The PGA TOUR would like to see the North Course about 2 shots tougher for the pros playing the Buick Invitational. Among the considerations are: lengthening the 2nd, 5th, 11th and 13th holes by placing the tees farther back; adding trees and bunkers. These changes should not increase playing difficulty for the average public player, since the bunkers would be strategically placed to catch the 260/280-yard drive. The conversations are in progress, and among the items to cover are who will pay for these modifications. (Editor's Note: When the "way back" tees on the 6th hole were set up for a Buick Invitational of a few years ago, this hole was the toughest par-3 on that PGA TOUR season. They asked not to use those tees anymore ... now they want a tougher course).

  • Golf Advisory Council (GAC) - 4/2/98: The council met as scheduled and quite a few members of our club were present, including all but two board members. (In case you didn't know, our president Hal Boston and TPMGC board members Hugh Chindlund and Walt Block are also members of the GAC.) This meeting was of particular concern because the GAC was to vote on a few tournament policy recommendations. These recommendations were motivated, according to John Walter, Golf Operations Manager (City of San Diego), by complaints coming from the general public regarding the unavailability of tee times at Torrey Pines, and the fact that whenever our club holds a tournament, slow play causes afternoon tournament and post-tournament players not to be able to finish 18 holes (as starting times get pushed forward considerably). As a result, Staff Recommendation #2, which would "limit continuous tee time tournament to a maximum of 120 players or four hours", was proposed. This would include, among other, our Men's and Women's clubs. So we were at risk of losing 24 tournament spots (6 tee time slots) in ALL our monthly and weekly tournaments.

Before proceeding to discuss and vote on recommendations, the GAC gave the opportunity to voice his/her view to any member of the public who wished to do so.

There was one person condemning the Men's and Womens's clubs because their "greed for tee times restricts the availability of tee times for the 'residents'". His comments were promptly answered by TPMGC members Bill Pultz, Matt Lees, JF Baebler, and Dan Groszkruger, who remarked that the TPMGC is composed of city and county residents, that the Men's and Women's clubs are the only opportunity San Diego residents have to play tournament golf in their golf courses, and that, if anything, the proposal should be reversed and give these two clubs MORE tee times, not less.

Following the comments from the public, the GAC proceeded to discuss the recommendations. All but one GAC member who commented on the "120 players" recommendation were opposed to reducing the number of players for Men's and Women's clubs' tournaments. The slow-play issue was addressed by Hal Boston and Walt Block, with some members of the public sneaking in a comment every now and then. Hal Boston offered to review the TPMGC slow-play problem and asked for the club to be given the opportunity to address the problem. Among others in favor of not limiting Men's and Women's clubs play was Debbie Miller, an LPGA professional currently working at the Torrey Pro Shop. She highlighted the need for the existence of both clubs. Her kind words in favor of our clubs were vividly applauded by the public.

The following recommendations made by the GAC Tournament Subcommittee were approved by the GAC, before dealing with the Staff Recommendations:

    1. Raise tournament fees on a per player basis to $5.00 per player on weekdays and $10.00 on weekends.
    2. Fifty-percent of the tournament fee is refundable up to 30 days prior to the event, and no refunds are given if the tournament is canceled less than 30 calendar days prior to the event.
    3. Torrey Pines Men's and Women's Golf Clubs should continue to be exempt from tournament fees.

    APPROVED Staff Recommendations:

    1. Limit organizations, companies, or golf groups to two tournaments per year at Torrey Pines Golf Course, only if the organization or tournament group plays one tournament at Balboa Golf Course prior to the second tournament at Torrey Pines Golf Course. Current policy limits groups to two tournaments per year and approximately 20 tournament groups are scheduled for two tournament events.
    2. Limit the number of tournament requests from "sponsors" (San Diego groups representing non-city entities) to three requests per day. Currently there is no limit to the number of requests a "sponsoring" group can submit.
    3. Schedule tournaments 18 months in advance to be submitted on a monthly or quarterly basis, instead of on a yearly basis. This will assist companies or organizations who are scheduling golfing events in conjunction with conferences or seminars.

The following recommendation WAS NOT approved the the GAC, with all but one member voting against it (the other vote was an abstention):

    • Limit continuous tee time tournaments to a mximum of 120 players or four hours. This would apply to all tournaments except those annual events waived by City Council Resolution. (examples: San Diego County Junior Golf Association, City Amateur Golf Championships, Buick Invitational.) The Torrey Pines Men's and Women's Golf Clubs would not be exempt from this policy.
MARCH 1998
  • Bob Kerfoot, former club president, board member, and co-chairman of the Thursday Tournaments, lost a long battle with cancer and passed away last Thursday, March 19th. Our deepest sympathies to his familiy, especially his wife Romi. Among many of his innovative ideas, Bob was the one who pushed to have a web site for the club to better serve its membership. He'll be missed.

  • Please take a look at the very interesting Time of Play study conducted by Roger Legare and Claude Gigoux, co-chairmen of tournaments for the Thursday group.

  • The results of the Sunday (February) tournament Sanderson Pinehurst are in.

  • NOTES from the Board Meeting of 3/17/98:

    • Sunday "Best 3 of 4" Tournament (1/11/98): As you recall, this tournament has been rescheduled for November 1st, 1998, North Course. Initially there was going to be a new sign-up for it. Due to numerous requests, particularly from those who were up at Torrey very very early in the morning in December to sign up for this tournament, those who were in the field by tournament day on Jan 11th (i.e., did not cancel their entry) will retain their tee time for Nov. 1st, PROVIDED THAT THEY ARE MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING BY NOV. 1st (i.e., they renew their membership this coming October). Those who cancelled their entry in January WILL NOT be automatically included in the Nov. 1st tournament. And since there was nobody left in the waiting list in January, another one will be made for November to fill in the spots left open by new cancellations. Call Walt Block, chairman of this tournament, for details or if you have questions.

    • MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION DISCOUNT: The club's board decided to have a Special mid-year membership application discount at $60. It will start on April 1st, 1998 and will end on September 30th, 1998. This membership will be good through September 30th, 1998. On October 1st, 1998 membership renewal and new member applications will go back to the original prices ($60 and $90, respectively). Those who apply through this special mid-year rate will have to renew by October 1st, 1998 to continue their membership onto next year. New application forms will be available in the lounge by April 1st, and also through this web page (make sure you follow the instructions). The club has currently 1,202 members. Last Oct-Dec period about 150 members did not renew membership for this year.

    • Golf Advisory Council: A VERY IMPORTANT MEETING, THURSDAY, APRIL 2nd, 7PM, BALBOA PARK, SANTA FE ROOM (west of the Aerospace Museum parking lot). The Torrey Pines Men's Club, a club whose members are City and County residents AND taxpayers, is at risk of losing playing privileges (tee times) at Torrey Pines. If you are a member you SHOULD attend this meeting. Please read, in the March TPMGC newsletter, President Hal Boston's statement.

    • Thursday Tournament Slow-Play: There will be a crack-down on slow play on the Thursday tournaments. Players will be on the clock and those who lose position (not keeping up with the group ahead) will be placed last in the field next time they enter a Thursday tournament (the "12:07" penalty, you may call it).

    • Golf Courses: North course greens were aerified. South greens will be aerified on 3/25. Rough mowed to 2 inches. Irrigation turned back on/off since late January. A break on the rainy season will help maintenance: fertilization coming up.

FEBRUARY 1998
  • I apologize for the delay in putting information on-line. I was out of town for a couple of weeks. Tee times for Thursday tournaments of March 5th and March 12th and for Sunday tournament of March 22nd are on line, as well as the results from the February 12, 19 and 26 tournaments.

JANUARY 1998
  • NOTES from the Board and General Meetings of 1/21/98:

    • Sunday "Best 3 of 4" Tournament (1/11/98): The tournament has been rescheduled for November 1st, 1998, North Course. Tournament chairman, Walt Block, will have a new sign-up day at a date to be determined.

    • Schedule Change!! - The Sunday, October 18th tournament has been moved to Sunday, October 11th by the Tournament Coordinator at Torrey Pines to accomodate the course schedule. Consequently, the sign-up fo the Turkey Shoot (Sunday version) will be held on October 3rd (instead of October 11th).

    • Golf Advisory Council: Next meeting will be on Thursday, February 12th, 7:00PM at Balboa Park Club, Santa Fe Room. If you want your voice heard, you should attend. Tournament policy recommendations will be discussed.

    • Due to health-related problems, Thursday Chairman Bob Kerfoot will not be able to be in charge of organizing the weekly Thursday events. The TPMGC Board is seeking a member, or members, to help Mark Rabwin (Thursday Co-Chairman) with this matter. Contact Hal Boston if interested.

    • Fifty percent of the entry fee for the Sunday February tournament, the Sanderson Pinehurst, will be donated to Junior Golf. The tournament honors Flo and Grady Sanderson who have done so much for the club since its beginning 40 years ago.

    • A lottery will be held tomorrow, Saturday, January 24th, 5PM to establish the field for the Sanderson Pinehurst. Steve Larsen, the Tournament Chairman, will hold this event at Torrey Pines (somewhere).

    • Sign-Up Reminder !!: The sign-up for the March tournament (Sunday group) will be held at Torrey Pines on Saturday, February 14th, 6:00AM

  • Check the new list of unpaid members I posted on the board at the Torrey lounge. It's a long list and your name, or one of your buddy's, may be on it. You MUST be an active member in order to be able to play in our tournaments. Also, if you changed your address or phone number make sure you let me know so I make the change in our database and with the SCGA.

  • Correction to the 1998 Schedule (Sunday): The Club Championships will start a week earlier (August 8th-9th) than previously scheduled. The change was made to accomodate Torrey Pines tournament schedule. Note that your wallet schedule has the correct dates in them.
